When talking technology, conversations in industry circles can mention any number of abbreviations involving anything from well-established business processes to some of the most current cloud announcements. There are only 26 letters in the alphabet but the acronym possibilities are practically endless in the technology realm.

Breaking down the various technology acronyms: IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS

Fear not, we will explain the basics of cloud computing and its associated service models as they relate to cupcakes... SWEET, right?

On-Premise, IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS explained via cupcakes:

A simplified explanation of service structures for ERP solutions

Traditional On-Premise

Technical explanation
On-premise software is installed and run on computers on the premises (in the building) of the organization using the software, rather than at a remote facility, such as at a server farm or cloud.

Cupcake Explanation
:
You can make cupcakes from scratch at home where you’re responsible for all aspects of the process from stirring batter to baking to eating.

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

Technical explanation
Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is a type of cloud computing in which a third-party provider hosts virtualized computing resources over the Internet.  In an IaaS model, a third-party provider hosts hardware, software, servers, storage and other infrastructure components on behalf of its users. IaaS providers also host users' applications and handle tasks including system maintenance, backup and resiliency planning.

Cupcake Explanation:
You can purchase pre-packaged batter and frosting from a grocer then process the rest of the scenario from home.

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)

Technical explanation
Platform as a service (PaaS) is a cloud computing model that delivers applications over the Internet. In a PaaS model, a cloud provider delivers hardware and software tools -- usually those needed for application development -- to its users as a service.

Cupcake Explanation:
You can have a bakery bake and deliver cupcakes to your location leaving you responsible for ONLY the eating.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

Technical explanation

Software as a service (SaaS) is a software licensing and delivery model in which software is licensed on a subscription basis and is centrally hosted. It is sometimes referred to as "on-demand software". SaaS is typically accessed by users using a thin client via a web browser.

Cupcake Explanation:
You simply go to your local bakery to enjoy where they have taken care of EVERY aspect.

In each scenario you’re still having cupcakes however the amount of involvement in the process varies from full end-user responsibility to partial involvement from both sides to total partner management in the cloud.

PRETTY SWEET, RIGHT?
