6 Thoughts to Consider When Starting a Business

By Ashley Lemus on Tue, Jul 12, 2016 @ 04:49 PM

So, you're thinking of starting a business.  How exciting!  While most entrepreneurs tend to take the plunge with great confidence in their ability to succeed, the concept of "success" can mean very different things to many different people.

Starting a business? Here are 6 essential things to consider

However, regardless of how you define success, keeping the following six business themes for your start-up in mind can help pave the way to realizing your visions and aspirations.

1. Be original, practical and have a sound business plan

New companies must use originality and innovation in order to set themselves apaprt from their competitiors.  It’s important to not only know but also be able to articulate your differentiated value proposition in order to ensure your business serves a real need in the target market.

Researching your target market is also essential to capture the details of execution in a comprehensive business plan. No entrepreneurial venture comes without risks. The key to success is to understand those risks and to minimize them with strategic planning, as well as a sound business plan that sets you on a course of action that can be referenced and refined along the way.

2. Know your target customer segment and ensure that it fits your expectations

To help you understand future market shares and revenues it’s important to research your target customer segment and addressable market in detail. This will allow you to focus the business on the product(s) or service area(s) that will set you apart from the competition. You might even experience a confidence boost when entering the competitive market.

3. Start a business with a partner and hire the right people

If you are seeking business partners for your start-up, make sure their experiences and backgrounds will complement yours and that they share a similar vision for the company. This decision, as you can imagine, must be one to consider carefully—there is often a big difference between friends with ambitions and effective business partners who can bring out the best in you and vice versa.

Once the founding members are in place and the business requires employees, it's important to ensure potential new hires have the experience to do the job. It's even more critical to get to know them and to understand what they are capable of contributing. Pay special attention to ensure they will fit in with the intended role, culture, and possess a capacity for growth.

Never lose sight that your employees are your most valuable assets, as they can significantly enhance the experiences of your customers.

4. Ensure your business has sufficient capital and positive cash flow

As you may be aware, many new businesses are not immediately profitable and require investment capital to sustain over a period of time. Business owners need to estimate how long this period may be by gaining a clear understanding of the operational expenses and determining a realistic timeframe to reach profitability and sustainability.

5. Bring a business mentor along for the journey

Having a mentor to help guide you through all stages of the business life cycle can do wonders.

The mentor can act as a sounding board to provide insight, perspective, and vision. Mentors should come from a perspective of wisdom and have the ability to challenge your views. A mentor often possesses valuable personal contacts that can help your business in many areas, in addition to industry knowledge.

6. Launch your business when everything is (almost) in place

There is a fine line between launching your business too quickly and agonizing over the perfection of every single detail. You can always generate more projections, graphs, and contingency plans to the point where you begin to second guess the original vision of success. The important thing is to know when enough is enough—and when it’s time to launch your business.

Dream big
Once your business is established and running smoothly you will feel a tremendous amount of pride and a strong sense of accomplishment. The next step, however, is to dream big by planning ahead for your business and life—to move towards your very own definition of "success." While there are many things to consider when starting your business, dream big, taking action and getting ready to enjoy the ride of your lifetime are by far the most important.
